Find the roots of the equation x² − 5x + 6 = 0.
1. Factorise: look for two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to −5. Those are −2 and −3.
2. So x² − 5x + 6 = (x − 2)(x − 3) = 0.
3. Set each factor to zero: x − 2 = 0 or x − 3 = 0.
Answer: x = 2 or x = 3.
If sin θ = 3/5, find the value of cos θ, where θ is acute.
1. Use the identity sin²θ + cos²θ = 1.
2. cos²θ = 1 − (3/5)² = 1 − 9/25 = 16/25.
3. Since θ is acute, cos θ is positive: cos θ = √(16/25) = 4/5.
Answer: cos θ = 4/5.
Find the 15th term of the AP: 3, 7, 11, 15, …
1. First term a = 3, common difference d = 7 − 3 = 4.
2. The nth term is aₙ = a + (n − 1)d.
3. a₁₅ = 3 + (15 − 1)·4 = 3 + 56 = 59.
Answer: 59.
Find the HCF of 96 and 404 using the prime factorisation method.
1. 96 = 2⁵ × 3. 404 = 2² × 101.
2. The common prime factor is 2, taken to the lowest power present in both: 2².
3. HCF = 2² = 4.
Answer: 4.
If α and β are the zeroes of x² − 5x + 6, find α + β and αβ.
1. For ax² + bx + c, sum of zeroes = −b/a and product = c/a.
2. Here a = 1, b = −5, c = 6, so α + β = −(−5)/1 = 5.
3. αβ = 6/1 = 6.
Answer: α + β = 5, αβ = 6.
Find the distance between the points (2, 3) and (5, 7).
1. Distance formula: √[(x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²].
2. = √[(5 − 2)² + (7 − 3)²] = √[3² + 4²] = √[9 + 16] = √25.
Answer: 5 units.
Find the volume of a sphere of radius 7 cm. (Use π = 22/7.)
1. Volume of a sphere = (4/3)πr³.
2. = (4/3) × (22/7) × 7³ = (4/3) × (22/7) × 343.
3. = (4/3) × 22 × 49 = (4 × 22 × 49)/3 = 4312/3 ≈ 1437.33.
Answer: 4312/3 cm³ ≈ 1437.33 cm³.
A bag contains 5 red and 3 blue balls. One ball is drawn at random. What is the probability it is red?
1. Total balls = 5 + 3 = 8.
2. Favourable outcomes (red) = 5.
3. Probability = 5/8.

Common mistakes students make in Class 10 maths
- Sign errors in quadratic factorisation. Always check your two numbers multiply to give the constant term and add to give the middle coefficient, with the correct signs.
- Mixing up sin and cos in trigonometric identities. Write the identity down first, then substitute, rather than doing both steps at once.
- Forgetting units in mensuration answers. The board deducts marks for a numerically correct answer with no unit or the wrong unit.
- Not writing the formula before substituting. Sections C-E are marked on method, so writing "Distance = √[(x₂−x₁)² + (y₂−y₁)²]" before plugging in numbers protects your marks even if the arithmetic slips.
- Skipping the "hence" step in AP and probability problems. Many questions ask you to use one result to find another; read the full question before starting.
